Scheduling Reinforcements the Right way!

July 15, 2022 The Editorial Board- Teamware Solutions

We had earlier looked at type of reinforcements and their effect on performance. Equally important is going to be the aspect optimizing the schedules for reinforcements. Some of the different schedules of reinforcement that can be applied to your team members as below:

Fixed Interval

• Receiving a reward after a fixed time interval
• Ex: Receiving a pay check at the end of every month

Fixed Ratio

• Receiving a reward after a fixed number of responses
• Ex: Getting paid after every 5 cars sold

Variable Interval

• Receiving a reward after time intervals of different length
• Ex: Receiving praise only now and then, a surprise inspection, a pop quiz

Variable Ratio

• The number of units produced to receive a reward varies
• Ex: A lottery for employees, introducing probabilistic rewards

In a breakthrough research done with a set of teachers who were given variable ratio reinforcement to grade the answer papers please refer to the results below:

Baseline Compensation: $1.5 per hour And then Bonuses were introduced:

Bonus in condition 1:

• 50 cents per 1 exam sheet if correctly guess a coin flip

Bonus in condition 2:

• 25 cents per one exam sheet, guaranteed (no coin flip)

In another breakthrough variable ratio program introduced by New York Life Insurance there was a lottery system introduced for employees with perfect attendance even though the odds of winning such a lottery was very low. Surprisingly it reduced the employee absenteeism by 21%  – Source: Romero & Kleiner (2000)

Key Takeaways!

• Ratio schedules are typically more powerful than interval schedules
• Fixed interval and fixed ratio schedules are the most popular in organizations (but that doesn’t mean they’re the most effective)
• Consider using the variable-ratio schedule of reinforcement

Now let us look at the scenario below and answer what could be the right approach 😊

Think About It!

Goal

Get your daughter to do her homework

Which schedule of reinforcement would most effectively motivate your child to do her homework and keep doing her homework in the future?

A. Giving your daughter a piece her favourite candy after every 20 minutes of studying
B. Giving your daughter 3 pieces of her favourite candy after every 60 minutes of studying
C. Giving your daughter 2 pieces of candy after the first 30 minutes of studying, no candy after the next 30 minutes of studying, and then 1 piece of candy after every 15 minutes of studying

Happy Guessing!! 😊………………………………………………………………………………………………..
