Large teams overlook one thing that actually plays a huge part in their success. EMOTIONS.

The more positive the emotion is among the team members, the better the workplace morale.

As a leader, leveraging or controlling emotional setting and positivity within the organization is vital. Managing this successfully is called emotional intelligence.

Here are some of the tips to control this interesting phenomenon:

• Be mindful of your own mood:

When your mood shifts, whether positive or negative, it can quickly spread to your team members and influence their emotions either way. Everybody goes through a rollercoaster of emotions based on what is happening around them. A bad or unpleasant mood that you carry can spread very fast. As a leader, start your day with a positive note—like listening to uplifting music or affirmations that help become positive

• Leverage nonverbal communication:

Research shows that less than 10% of emotional communication happens through words. Observe your body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions when you are addressing your team. Let’s say that you do not make eye contact at a meeting because you are focused on the numbers and slides. But people may perceive it as you being disinterested and go on to imitate the same thing, spreading the emotional contagion to other members as well.

• Address the negativity:

As a leader, know that emotions can spread within your team. Have a private conversation with your team members whenever they show negative emotions like disinterested or not being a team player or not motivated enough. People don’t realize how their words and actions are being perceived. As a leader, it is important to address and contain it before it spreads among your team members.
