Defining Success at Work
Many a times we come across different definitions of success at work. Broadly we can look at the following success factors:
1. Salary /Remuneration
2. Satisfaction at work
3. Work-Life Balance
4. Sense of Belonging
5. Power/Position
Sometimes we find individuals who are good in one or two aspects and experience lacunae in other aspects. But overall if you don’t feel deep inside a motivation/urge to get to work fresh in the morning then it is time for introspection and see what is affecting your mind-set!
Yes there are leaders who go up the ladder and get paid well and hold powerful positions as decision makers. If you talk to them I am sure they would reveal they do enjoy the power and perks but it won’t make them sustainable in the long run. What is more important is whether they are satisfied with the work they do and does it make a difference to lives around them? As long as these leaders do not scale up to current market demands/direction and lead the way they would be seen as a Liability for the organization and quickly replaced with someone who is so hands-on!
Also, the converse is also true! Even though you are satisfied with your work/career but if you still do not get into a good salary or due power play within the organization then you would feel out of place and develop a craving to jump jobs at the slightest opportunity you get!
So long as there is balance between these aspects and do not deviate too much in terms of skewed career goals then you would feel content at work. It is very important that you practise the principles of Bhagavad Gita during tough patches in your career where results might be out of your control even though you put in the right effort. Each one of us goes through a tough patch in our career and it’s important that we stay strong and be flexible to a certain extent that does not affect your work or sense of belonging. What matters most is you must love your job and feel good to get to work on a Monday morning! In fact the pace with which you walk in to your desk you will know if the job/company is worth your salt!
Success is a moving target and so be Alert and as close to the real-world in defining your success formula!
