Compliance or Responsibility

Many a times we end up in situations where we feel the need to just stick to the job given and not worry about
being mindful of happenings around us.
We can tell from the words of our team members when they say. “I’m just doing my job.” “Will this be demoed?”
“Don’t blame me.” “It’s what everyone else is doing.”
Keep your head down, do what you’re told, don’t stick your neck out, and most of all, pay attention to what
everyone else is doing has become our habit and business as usual at many organizations.
All of this comes from the feeling that responsibility lies elsewhere. From individuals and organizations that benefit
from our compliance.
This is not about freedom. It’s responsibility. The responsibility to show up, to care a bit more, to raise your hand and
to make a difference.
Compliance is enticing because it comes with short-term benefits. If you fit in all the way, it might feel a bit less
frightening. The centre of the herd may in fact be safer, but the outcomes are terrible.
We don’t spend nearly enough time celebrating responsibility. The outcome is disastrous when we do not look
around and act & do something that can bring long term benefits. What matters is our willingness to see what’s
happening and to sign up to do something about it irrespective of the outcome.
It begins with figuring out just who is pushing so hard for you to comply.
